Soft boards are made from high-density plastic foam that is soft and floats well. They came to production from the demand for a board that wouldn't hurt if it hit someone and has become the standard for surf schools and first time surfers. Body boards are also made of the same materials and were the first to use this type of foam construction. These boards are all about fun.  I use a softboard on choppy days on Long Beach Island. These boards catch everything.  I like to knee paddle and they are so soft on the knees they cause no pain even after hours of knee paddling.  If you have ever knee paddled on a hard board you know what it does to you knees.  Also you can take on waves larger than you may be ready for and just go for it because a wipe out on a softboard is no biggie.  If you did that on a hard board you could be in serious trouble..........Andy
