DJ Setup for Heavy Scratching and Back-Cueing
- For extensive scratching or
back-cueing (see Figure 4), the
cartridge should be mounted with a
headshell weight to prevent skipping.
- Follow Cartridge Installation instructions above.
- When mounting the cartridge to a headshell, place a headshell weight on top of the cartridge (see Figure 5).
- Thread screws up from bottom to
provide maximum record clearance (See
Figure 5). Before tightening the
mounting screws, slide the cartridge all
the way to the front of the headshell.
- Make the following final
adjustments. Consult your turntable
instructions where needed.
>> Tracking Force: Normally set at the top of, or above, the recommended range (See Balance Wheel).
>> Balance Wheel at the rear of the tonearm: The typical scratch DJ positioning for the balance wheel is in the middle of the range over which it can be moved.
>> Anti-Skate: Set to zero.
>> Tonearm Height: Set to 5.5 (if adjustable).
Cartridge Operation
- Make certain cartridge is correctly mounted in tonearm and stylus is properly inserted in cartridge.
- Protect stylus with stylus guard when dusting turntable.
- Regulate tonearm set-down to prevent stylus from striking edge of turntable or record.
- Do not handle tonearm while record is being played. Use cueing device if available.
- If manual set-down is necessary, release arm as soon as stylus engages groove.
- Do not activate arm without record(s) on turntable.
- Do not use damaged records.
- Check tracking force and anti-skate adjustments periodically. The Shure SFG-2 Tracking Force Gauge provides a simple way to accurately set tracking force.
Stylus Cleaning
Use a soft brush with alcohol or an alcohol-distilled water solution. Brush only from back to front as show (see Figure 6). Commercial cleaning solutions may cause stylus damage.
